Kryvyi Rih develops a systemic approach to mine action education

Kryvyi Rih hosted the forum "Mine Safety in Education: From Lessons to Sustainable Practices," focusing on developing systemic solutions to integrate safety awareness into the educational curriculum.

On 3 April 2026, a forum “Mine Action Safety in Education: From Lessons to Sustainable Practices” took place in Kryvyi Rih, bringing together educators, public authorities, experts and civil society organisations to develop systemic solutions for mine action education.

The event was organised by the Information and Education Hub “Kryvyi Rih. Demining” within the framework of the project KRYTSIA: Support for Recovery of Kryvyi Rih Raion, funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and implemented by LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency, in partnership with Proman and BDF.

The discussions focused on transforming standalone mine safety lessons into a comprehensive and sustainable system of knowledge within educational institutions. Participants explored how to integrate safety approaches into the learning process, strengthen cross-sectoral cooperation and develop practical tools for educators.

As noted by Support for Recovery of Kryvyi Rih Raion project team lead Gennadiy Rusanov, strengthening mine action education is a response to long-term safety challenges and a key element in protecting children and youth.

The importance of a systemic approach was also highlighted by the Head of the Education and Science Department of the Executive Committee of the Kryvyi Rih City Council Tetiana Kripak, who emphasised the role of continuous learning for teachers, students and parents.

As a result of the forum:

  • key barriers and drivers for the implementation of mine action education were identified;
  • practical solutions for integrating safety topics into the curriculum were developed;
  • a set of priority initiatives ready for implementation in schools was defined;
  • cooperation between the education sector, authorities, experts and civil society was strengthened.

An additional outcome was the development of methodological approaches aimed at ensuring that mine safety education is both effective and psychologically safe for students.

The forum marked an important step towards building a comprehensive mine action education system in Kryvyi Rih and demonstrated the community’s readiness to work together to ensure the safety of children and youth.
