Kryvyi Rih Gymnasium No. 114 Launches a New, Comfortable Shelter for more than 110 Students

Expanding the network of safe spaces allows a growing number of children in Kryvyi Rih to return to full-time in-person learning, socialize with their peers, and develop in a secure environment.

A second shelter has been successfully renovated and equipped at Kryvyi Rih Gymnasium No. 114 within the framework of of the project KRYTSIA: Support for the recovery of Kryvyi Rih Raion, funded by The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and implemented by LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency, in partnership with Proman and the BDF.

Currently, 573 children attend Gymnasium No. 114, with only 84 studying remotely. In-person classes are organized in two shifts: primary school students attend in the morning, while grades 5–9 attend in the afternoon. Before this project, the school had only one shelter with a 50-person capacity, which severely limited their ability to hold traditional classroom lessons.

The shelter upgrade at Gymnasium No. 114 is part of a massive regional recovery program. Last year alone, the KRYTSIA project renovated 16 shelters in Kryvyi Rih’s educational institutions, improving safety conditions for nearly 8,000 kindergarteners and schoolchildren.

“The KRYTSIA project isn’t just about rebuilding infrastructure; it’s about creating sustainable living and development conditions for Kryvyi Rih communities amidst today’s challenges,” emphasized Hennadiy Rusanov, team lead of the KRYTSIA: Support for the recovery of Kryvyi Rih Raion project. “We can see the real impact of our partnership—children are returning to a normal educational routine. That’s why we aren’t slowing down: we plan to renovate at least 20 more shelters in the city’s educational institutions in 2026.”

The construction and renovation work involved a comprehensive upgrade of the premises, including major repairs to the floors, walls, and ceilings—ranging from waterproofing and leveling to antiseptic treatment, bioprotection, and final finishing—as well as a complete modernization of the utility networks, specifically the installation of new water supply, sewage, ventilation, electrical, and fire alarm systems, along with the relocation of heating networks. As part of the project, the space was functionally zoned: a dedicated area for storing drinking water supplies was partitioned off, and a separate room was set up for a medical professional. The sanitary facilities were upgraded with the installation of modern stalls, sinks, faucets, and plumbing. Special attention was given to safety and inclusivity—an emergency exit was constructed, and in partnership with the city, a motorized lifting platform was installed to ensure barrier-free access.

Having a second shelter is a breath of fresh air for our school. Thanks to the KRYTSIA project, we now have an additional 110 safe spots. With both shelters, we can accommodate 160 children at the same time. This allows us to organize the educational process much more efficiently, bring more students back to the classroom, and provide them with comfort and—most importantly—safety during air raid alerts.
