The Future of Education in Kryvyi Rih: What Can High Schoolers Expect in 2027?

"Children should have the freedom to choose"—this was the core message during a recent presentation on high school reform, held in Kryvyi Rih by experts from the "Zmist" charitable foundation.

What will change for students starting in 2027?

The education reform introduces a fundamental shift in how high school students are taught. The primary goal of these changes is to empower young people to shape their own educational paths and better prepare for their future careers.

Key changes include:

  • Transition to a 12-year system: High school in Ukraine will now cover grades 10 through 12 (replacing the current 10–11 system).

  • Moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach: The standard, uniform set of subjects will be replaced by specialized academic tracks.

Modern courses for a new generation

To ensure education meets the demands of today’s world, entirely new disciplines are being developed for high schoolers. Some of the highly relevant courses that will be offered include:

  • Political Science: Understanding how the state and society function.

  • Critical Text Analysis: Developing fact-checking skills and the ability to tell truth from fake news.

  • Personal Development: Helping students discover themselves and unlock their core strengths.

  • Career Guidance: Practical tools for making informed choices about future professions.

Early achievements: How the project is already transforming education

Preparations for the rollout of the reform in the Kryvyi Rih district are in full swing.

  • Educational experts of “Zmist”, within the framework of the project “KRYTSIA: Support for Recovery of Kryvyi Rih Raion,” have developed more than 1,200 ready-to-use teaching and methodological materials.

  • More than 400 teachers completed the theoretical training module on developing original courses for upper secondary specialised education.

  • With mentoring support from Zmist’s education leads, teachers from the Kryvyi Rih area developed 25 educational programmes, which can already serve as supporting resources for colleagues preparing to implement the upper secondary specialised education reform.

The event was held as part of the “KRYTSIA: Support for the Recovery of the Kryvyi Rih District” project, which is funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and implemented by the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency (LuxDev) in partnership with Proman and BDF. The project’s goal is to provide systemic support and foster the development of the region.
